FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you really get asked questions frequently enough to warrant a FAQ page? No.
Did you actually steal these questions from other authors’ websites? 100% yes.
About
How do you pronounce your last name? The correct way is “HAY-se-ler,” the bastardized version is “HESS-ler.” I respond to either one.
Where do you live/where are you from? I live in San Diego, California, and I was raised in Clearwater, Florida. I’ve also lived in Miami, New York, London, and in Tallinn, Estonia.
Preferred pronouns? She/her
How do I get in touch with you? You can email me (info at hollyhaeseler dot com) or use the contact form. I try to respond to every email, but it may take me a while to get back to you.
About FAIR CHASE
Can you tell me more about Fair Chase? Fair Chase is about an ambitious philosophy grad student who embarks on a remote culinary adventure in Estonia led by a controversial celebrity chef, when she begins to suspect that she’s being hunted – both as a trophy and as culinary fare.
What kind of research did you do to write the book? Most of the research was gained from life experience, especially multiple culinary adventures. I wanted to know more about where meat comes from, and of course the deeper you go the more interesting it becomes. While I have hunted, dressed, and cooked many of the dishes described in the book, I have not actually tried *all* of them, which as you’ll read in the novel, is probably for the best. The rest was the result of pure imagination. 😉
Where can I buy Fair Chase? My debut is coming soon – as soon as I have more news that I can announce, I’ll update here.
On Writing
How long did it take you to write your debut? Less than a year all-in, but there were so many starts and stops with the taking care of three kids, querying, and of course the pandemic.
Are you a Plotter or a Pantser? I’m a Plantser – both! And I know it doesn’t make any sense, but I envy people who are adept at just one or the other.
How do you get an agent? Query agents who work within your genre (their websites will have guidelines), in small batches, revising with any great feedback you’re lucky enough to get. Then query again until you find someone who is truly passionate about your story. Don’t be afraid of rejection; it’s absolutely a mainstay of the process.
How do you feel about Fan Art? I dream of actually getting some one day!
Can I get an advanced reader copy (arc) of your book? As soon as I have publishing details I can make public, I will.
Miscellaneous
Are you a dog or a cat person? Cat all the way – pound for pound, they’re the greatest, easiest-to-own pet there is. A bad cat is better than a good dog (kidding! Kind of) …
Sweet or savory? I lean savory, but love chocolate and Nutella.
Ocean or mountains? Love both! Lean ocean because of the fun of weightless snorkeling, though.
Physical books, e-books, or audio? I love ALL THREE!
Where can I find out more info about you? You can learn more than you ever wanted to know on my blog, Suburban Adventuress, or click my Blog tab, above.
